8/23/2023 0 Comments There are no saints by sophie lark![]() Henry Elwes, who in 1897 become the first person to receive the Royal Horticultural Society’s highest honour, the Victoria Medal, also collected trees, and both park and village are resplendent with specimens of rare and exotic trees from all over the world. The snowdrop displays have become even more dazzling since then, with some 300 varieties on show, developed by the present Lady Elwes from the original collection of the Victorian naturalist Henry Elwes, after whom Britain’s most prolific snowdrop Galanthus Elwesii is named. She lies here, beside her first husband, because the ornate tomb had been commissioned for the two of them before Sir Thomas died.Ī short walk downstream brings you to the village of Cowley, tumbling down the hillside to Cowley Manor, an Italianate pile with 50 acres of glorious gardens with lakes and cascades. After Sir Thomas’s death in 1365, Joan married Sir William Whittington of Pauntley and thus became sister-in-law to that legend of panto, beloved of children throughout the land, Dick Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London. The fine effigies are of Sir Thomas de Berkeley, who fought bravely at the Battle of Crecy in 1346, and his wife Joan. ![]() Sir Giles’ heart lies inside the church adjacent to the grave of his war horse Lombard, who is buried outside.
